HER EXCELLENCY THE HIGH COMMISSIONER OF THE REPUBLIC OF MALAWI TO MOZAMBIQUE VISITS TETE PROVINCE 7 TO 9 FEBRUARY 2022
Her Excellency Wezi Moyo, High Commissioner of the Republic of Malawi to the Republic of Mozambique undertook a familiarization tour to the Province of Tete from 7 to 9 February, 2022, as part of her efforts to strengthen the bilateral relations between the Government of Malawi and that of Mozambique. Her Excellency Wezi Moyo paid courtesy calls to the Secretary of State Her Excellency Elisa Zacharias, and the Governor Domingos Viola. Further, she interacted with the Director of Immigration, the Attorney General, as well as the President of CTA representing the network of the business community in Mozambique. Her Excellency also paid a visit to the border posts of Cuchamano and Zobue. In her message, her Excellency reaffirmed the resolve of the Government of Malawi to maintain the existing cordial relations between the two nations. She also underlined the strategic importance of Tete Province, not only as a trading partner, but also as a gateway to other economies in the SADC Region. Her visit provided the window of opportunity to table and resolve some challenges faced by both parties in the course of their work. For example while Mozambique decried increased illegal immigration by Malawians and crossing of borders without proper documentation, Malawi raised the increased scourge where corrupt immigration officers force travelers to pay R50 for a stump in their passports. Both parties asserted that the borders between the two countries were artificial, as the peoples of the two countries have intermarried since time immemorial, and hence they are true blood brothers. Furthermore, HE the High Commissioner had the occasion to express the Government of Malawi’s appreciation of the role that the Republic of Mozambique continues to play in the Development of the Government of Malawi. She also appreciated the achievements and challenges experienced by both parties and encouraged continued contact and dialogue as the way forward. On a sad note, Her Excellency took time to pass a message of condolences to His Excellency President Felipe Jacinto Nyusi and the people of Mozambique on the loss of lives and damage of property, including infrastructure following the aftermath of Cyclone Ana. Her Excellency’s visit coincided with the initial stages of the preparations for the Business Mission to Malawi scheduled for March, 2022. In that respect, Her Excellency the High Commissioner alongside the President of CTA held a Press briefing regarding the Business Mission. |
